Visitors can turn the pages of newly acquired replicas of the museum’s postcard albums. They’ll discover how Christmas greetings cards have changed since the first decades of the twentieth century, how flowers, celebrities and local events were common images, and that Santa and reindeer were nowhere to be seen.
Children can compare their own Christmas presents with those given to Ella and Hazel Porter. Christmas gifts were few in number; a doll or tiny tea set would have been cherished and the favourite Christmas Annual eagerly anticipated. Books and toys were expensive and valued possessions.
Visitors can see the Edwardian themed Christmas Tree and marvel at decorations made from only paper, wood, glass, and fabrics. No flashing electric lights or musical elves. Sadly, Herbert Porter died during the 1919 influenza epidemic, so he and Florence had only eight Christmases with their young family. Come to CHRISTMAS WITH THE PORTERS and see how they might have celebrated the season.
Don’t forget that MPH also has a CHRISTMAS STALL full of lovely homemade gifts, including yummy edible items, both on Open Day and on SATURDAY 30th NOVEMBER, 9-1pm, outside The Hive at Hamilton Uniting Church, Beaumont Street.
