The Hunter Region Sporting Hall of Fame celebrates over 400 elite athletes who have proudly represented Australia or competed on the international stage, having been born in or played within the Hunter region at both junior and senior levels.

Last year, six renowned athletes were inducted into this prestigious Hall of Fame. The 2023 inductees included:

Bridgette Starr (Football)
Jessica Malone (Judo)
Rebecca Young (Rugby League, Rugby Union)
Siennah Pirona (Aerobics)
Simon Orchard (Hockey)
Troy Bayliss (Motorcycle Racing)
These athletes join a celebrated list of Novocastrians such as Jenni Screen, Ray Baartz, Mark Richards and Danny Buderus.

To qualify for nomination, candidates must have represented Australia as an athlete or official in an authorized event, be retired from professional sport, and must have been born in or have competed or officiated for a team or association in the Hunter Region.

Brett O’Farrell, Chief Executive Officer of HAS, expressed his enthusiasm for the event: “We are thrilled to host the Hunter Region Sporting Hall of Fame once again. This event provides a wonderful opportunity to recognize and celebrate the outstanding careers of our local athletes with their loved ones. It’s a chance to honour the significant impact that sport has had on our region.”

O’Farrell added, “With the 2024 Olympics on the horizon, it’s especially exciting to reflect on and celebrate the achievements of our local sports heroes, both recent and long retired. We eagerly anticipate celebrating our 2024 inductees in August, alongside our committee, HAS board members, and the inductees’ friends and families.”

A Tribute to the Newcastle Steelworks Band

A Tribute to the Newcastle Steelworks Band

Brass Band Newcastle (BBN) has been formed from some of the best brass player across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast with special guests from Sydney, under the baton of conductor Conrad Curry. The concert is happening at 2pm on Sunday 30 June at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music, Newcastle.  You will enjoy the afternoon as BBN takes you through a musical journey of Brass Music that was played by a small group of BHP Steelworkers in the 1920’s. In 1924 the Newcastle Steelworks Brass Band travelled to Britain to take part in musical contests, culminating in winning the British Empire Champions. What a shock to the Brits that a brass band from the colonies would or could win this prestigious competition! 100 years on, come and listen to the music and narration of their journey. All proceeds to Dementia Australia.

Newcastle Music Festival Event – Rachmaninoff meets Paganini

Newcastle Music Festival presents Rachmaninoff meets Paganini on Sunday August 18 at 2:30pm at Christ Church Cathedral. Erin Sweetman joins the Camerata in the ‘Rach-Pag’ – one of the epics of the piano repertoire. Numerous composers have made sets of variations on Paganini’s original melody, including Paganini himself, but none are more popular than Rachmaninoff’s brilliant work, which includes one of the greatest tunes of all time in the 18th Variation. The colour of Eastern European music continues in Kilar’s marvellous ‘Orawa’, an evocation of folk fiddlers on the Polish mountains. Also on the program, arrangements by Principal Violist, Paul Groh, of delightful works by the German Baroque composer, Johann Groh, and a new work by Artistic Director, David Banney.

Newcastle Music Festival Event – Roderick Williams – Masterclass

Newcastle Music Festival Event – Roderick Williams – Masterclass

According to Roderick Williams, “A masterclass is not a singing lesson. It is an opportunity for a student to work with a professional singer in an informal atmosphere considering the approach to a song, with a focus on conveying their interpretation of the text through performance, in front of a sympathetic audience”. Students and lovers of singing are welcome to attend and observe this prestigious and rare event as invited singers work with one of the world’s great baritones on Friday, August 23 at 2.30pm at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music
