Newcastle Police say they’re looking for information on a white Volvo seen at Bar Beach and found burnt out at Tingira Heights this morning.

At 11:40pm police found an 18-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his upper torso, he was assisted by paramedics but he couldn’t be saved.

Police say they don’t believe a brawl which was taking place was related with the shooting, and detectives from the State Crime Homicide Squad have been called in for Strike Force Bolwarra, at this stage they don’t believe the shooter and victim were known to each other.

Newcastle City District Commander Acting Superintendent Steve Benson says the investigation is in its early stages.

“We’re still working through that, we don’t believe the fight was organised, and we don’t believe this incident is related to the earlier fight at the carpark” he said.

“We’re looking into all lines of inquiry … we’re yet to establish a motive,” he said on Thursday.
