Newcastle-based Domestic Violence Refuge organisation Survivors R Us will be handed $2.8 million pending a Labor re-election.

The organisation has been struggling to pay rent having received no Government funding, the latest announcement could see it stay open for years to come.

Founder Ann Maria Martin says it’s great news.

“What more could we ask for- to get that on our birthday that we’re going to be able to stay and that we’re going to be able to help people everyday, it’s so so important,” she said.

The impact of this funding on the community is substantial.

“We’ve had DV clients who have escaped by us being able to be here for them. Otherwise, they would not be here and we would be reporting their deaths,” she said.

After being quizzed on if the funding was contingent on a re-elected Labor Government, Shortland MP Pat Conroy said he called on the Coalition to match the promise.
