The Merriwa community has rallied at last nights Upper Hunter Shire Council meeting, with a turnout of 80 members in support of keeping the region’s only aged care facility.

A report to Council’s meeting last night said it wouldn’t be feasible to keep it run by Council in its current condition.

Following lively debate, Council agreed on a compromise- to investigate how to keep the facility open, acknowledging private providers likely wouldn’t step in as the building’s not up to modern standards.

Merriwa District Progress Association President Stephen Gowlland says it can stay open if all options are properly considered.

“That’s why we’re doing this, because we have faith and we have hope that Gummun Place will remain similar but the same format,” he said.

“So long as we have an aged care facility in Merriwa, that’s the most important thing,” he said.
