The Greens say the State Government is breaking a statewide 30% commitment to affordable housing in the Broadmeadow Place Strategy.
It comes after social and affordable housing was identified as a key issue as part of the plans.
The Greens say there was only a total of 5-10% affordable housing included for all four Government-owned sites, with 5% for the basketball and PCYC site, 5% for the Showground site and 10% for the Locomotive Depot after their re-zoning was confirmed this month.
Newcastle Greens councilor Charlotte McCabe says these three parcels of land should be better used.
“We lose four priceless pieces of public land and we essentially privatise them,” she said.
“When homes are subject to market prices they become completely unaffordable,” she said.
