Two people have been rescued after the light helicopter they were in crashed into Lake Macquarie this morning.

Fire and Rescue NSW says emergency services were called to Marmong Point just before 10.30am on Wednesday.

It’s believed a gyrocopter crashed into shallow water.

The two people on board were accounted for and are being accessed by paramedics but it’s believed they are both conscious and have not suffered serious injuries.

Local boat owners have assisted in towing the aircraft to a local boat ramp.

Hazmat crews have placed booms around the aircraft as a precaution.
