A Hunter-based advocate says safety improvements need to be made to support women on the Fernleigh Track.
There’s concern about inadequate lighting and CCTV on the popular path, after a woman was assaulted, prompting a march earlier this month.
Advocate Kristy Smith says it needs to be made a priority.
“There’s hardly anyone around, and [perpetrators] know they can get away with it,” she said.
“Our police do everything they can, but perpetrators know once they get through the justice system, it’ll be a slap on the hand, and will walk away,” she said.
It comes as Newcastle Council performs maintenance works on the tunnel for better drainage.
