A car has been seen flipped on its roof on the New England Highway at Cessnock Road at Maitland Railway Station.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene at about 10:45 this morning (27 March).

Early reports suggest a male and female in their 80s are conscious and breathing inside, another car is involved with three passengers but their condition is not clear.

It’s been causing heavy traffic, particularly westbound on the New England Highway and Les Darcy Drive, one lane has been closed in each direction.

Transport for NSW has said this morning delays would continue until the car is righted and passengers are freed.
