Councillor Carol Duncan announced today there will be free parking available in Hunter Street Mall car park on Saturdays, from now until the end of the year.

The changes are the result of a “terrific collaboration between Newcastle City Council and Newcastle Now,” who hope waiving the $7 fee will encourage Novocastrians to come into the CBD.

The decision came after suggestions from struggling businesses affected by the light rail construction.

The Mall car park, situated between King and Hunter streets, will be open not only to the public but also to staff members of the local businesses.

“We are hoping to see businesses encourage staff to use the car park and that will free up parks [in neighbouring streets], ” Ms Duncan said.
