The Hunter region of New South Wales has a long tradition of brass music and 2NURFM is the only local radio station that features brass music.’
During his 47 years in banding, Geoff McGregor has amassed a lifetime of knowledge and for 36 years has been sharing that knowledge with listeners to Brass Encounters.
Geoff has been the recipient of several major awards for service to the Community through Brass Banding including Lake Macquarie Citizen of the Year in 2005. He is a State and National Champion for both playing and marching and is a well known Tenor Horn player in this region and further afield.

29 May 2026, 8am Brass Encounters On this edition of Brass Encounters, Geoff McGregor leads off with a version of The Stars and Stripes Forever, featuring the piccolo solo performed by the E-flat bass player. The performance was given by the Capital City Brass Band from Jackson, Michigan. Then cornet soloist Mark Wilkinson and Foden’s Band perform Glorious Ventures by Peter Graham.

22 May 2026, 9am Brass Encounters On this edition of Brass Encounters, Geoff McGregor opens the program with the William Rimmer march The Victors Return, performed by Foden's Band under the direction of Michael Fowles. Professor David King then leads the Yorkshire Building Society Band in Spirit of Celebration. Written by Kenneth Downie, the work has become a signature piece for the band and is frequently featured as a brilliant concert opener.

15 May 2026, 8am Brass Encounters On this edition of Brass Encounters, Geoff McGregor opens the program with the renowned Black Dyke Band under the direction of Nicholas Childs performing Salute to Berne. The music continues with Brass Band Willebroek presenting and arrangement of Elton John's Hakuna Matata from the Disney film The Lion King.

8 May 2026, 7am Brass Encounters On this edition of Brass Encounters, Geoff McGregor leads off with the Kenny Rogers classic She Believes in Me arranged by Jan van Kraeydonck performed by Brassband Willebroek directed by Frans Violet. That's followed by a live recording of When I Survey (O Waly Waly) featuring the trombone soloist Brett Tolcher and the Chicago Staff Band conducted by Dr Harold Burgmayer.

3 May 2026, 9am Brass Encounters On this edition of Brass Encounters, Geoff McGregor leads off with the Ted French march Freedom From Sin, played by the Wellington Citadel Band. Then there’s more from Peter Roberts as soprano cornet soloist with the Yorkshire Building Society Band under Dr David King, performing Flowerdale from the 2002 album Hymn of the Highlands.

24 Apr 2026, 9am Brass Encounters On this edition of Brass Encounters, Geoff McGregor features music for ANZAC Day, leading off with Army of the Nile by Kenneth Alford, performed by the Household Troops Band. This heroic military march, which references The Last Post and Lights Out, was composed in 1941 following one of the first Allied victories in World War II.

17 Apr 2026, 9am Brass Encounters On this edition of Brass Encounters, Geoff McGregor plays a recording from a live recording of trombonist Isobel Daws and the Melbourne Staff Band in Song of Exuberance, a work written in 1966 by Leslie Condon. The recording is from the October 19, 2024 concert in Melbourne to celebrate the retirement of Ken Waterworth after more than 30 years as Bandmaster of the Melbourne Staff Band. Special guest Isobel Daws currently serves as Principal Trombone of the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra.

12 Apr 2026, 10am Brass Encounters Geoff McGregor opens this edition of Brass Encounters with Fiesta Parade performed by Black Dyke Band under the direction of Nicholas J. Childs.

5 Apr 2026, 10am Brass Encounters Geoff McGregor opens this edition of Brass Encounters with When You Believe performed by Soli Brass directed by Piet Groeneveld. Soli Brass is a top-level brass band from Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. Founded in 1936 (originally as Soli Deo Gloria), it later adopted the English-style brass band format in 1956.

29 Mar 2026, 9am Brass Encounters Geoff McGregor opens this edition of Brass Encounters with Fiesta Parade performed by Black Dyke Band under the direction of Nicholas J. Childs.

20 Mar 2026, 9am Brass Encounters Geoff McGregor opens this edition of Brass Encounters with Mein Böhmenland and Joy (based on Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring), performed by the Black Dyke Band, directed by Nicholas Childs.

15 Mar 2026, 8am Brass Encounters After numerous requests, Geoff McGregor once again opens Brass Encounters with Dance Fever, arranged by Dr Kenneth Downie and performed by the Yorkshire Building Society Band under the baton of Dr David King. The same band plays La Califfa, with Peter Roberts as soprano cornet soloist.
