A 7-hour stand off at Merewether has ended with a man surrendering peacefully to police.
Staff at St Joseph’s Primary School called police just before 1.30pm on Tuesday after a man wearing a crash helmet and a red cape climbed two stories onto the roof of a school building and refused to come down.
Specialist police were brought in to negotiate with the the 41-year-old, who eventually agreed to come down at about 8.30 last night.
He’s been taken to the Mater Hospital for observation and treatment where he remains under police guard.
Police say mental health and substance abuse are likely to be issues which led to the stand-off.
They say the man is expected to be charged with malicious damage and trespass offences.
