Newcastle Council lifeguards have closed city beaches, with big seas forecast in coming days.
Beaches from Nobbys to Merewether will be off limits to swimmers and rock fishers.
Stockton Beach will remain open
Despite the conditions, the Australian Board Riders Battle and Surfest will go ahead as planned as professional surfers descend on the city.
The weather bureau has issued a hazardous surf warning for the Hunter coast, with a two metre cyclone swell expected over the weekend.
Anyone wanting to use the Newcastle or Merewether Ocean Baths should check with lifeguards first before venturing into the water.
