UPDATE:


An unlicensed driver driving a stolen car will face Newcastle Local Court tomorrow after a police pursuit near the Ausgrid depot in Wallsend.


Police from Newcastle City Traffic and Highway Patrol were on Thomas Street, Wallsend, about 11:15am on Tuesday, when they saw a hatchback allegedly travelling at 112km/h in a 70km/h zone.



Officers attempted to stop the vehicle; however, will allege “the driver accelerated and a pursuit was initiated,” a statement said.



Checks revealed the hatchback had been reported stolen, as well as being a vehicle of interest in several reports of dangerous driving.



The driver was followed west along Thomas Street and Minimi Road, then north along Cameron Street; it was last seen travelling towards Birmingham Gardens.





About midday police found the vehicle in Davis Avenue, Wallsend.



A 23-year-old man was arrested after a foot pursuit to Mordue Parade, Jesmond.





The man was taken to Waratah Police Station where checks revealed he was unlicensed.



The Belmont man, was charged with four offences:

• Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous

• Exceed speed by more than 30km/h

• Never licensed person drive vehicle on road, and,

• Drive conveyance taken without consent of owner.



The man was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday.











EARLIER:






There have been reports of an incident involving police near the Wallsend Ausgrid

depot.

Waratah Police have confirmed they pursued a man on foot and cornered him in nearby a Park.
