On this edition of Wellbeing, we speak with Professor Nikola Bowden from the University of Newcastle, Australia. Prof. Bowden is an award-winning molecular biologist whose research is looking into innovative cancer drugs. The entire process of finding new cancer drugs can take 15 – 20 years to complete and so Prof. Bowden and her team are looking at how already existing drugs can be reused in new ways. Other areas of interest to Prof. Bowden are melanoma and ovarian cancer.

Prof. Bowden talks about what cancer is, why it exists, how it develops, the challenges in finding new treatments, what types are most common in Australia, how cancer can affect young people, and where the research field is at with cancer.

“I think we are in really exciting times. We’re making huge progress at the moment, and we are in a situation where lots of cancers are very treatable and with nicer treatments than we have had in the past.” – Prof. Nikola Bowden on this episode of Wellbeing
