Three people have been taken to hospital after a horror smash at Elrington southeast of Cessnock.

Emergency services were called to Lake Road just before 7.30 last night where a Toyota Hi Lux Ute and a Mistubishi Pajero  had collided head-on.

Police say one of the vehicles left the road and collided with several trees.

A 26-year-old man, who was the driver and sole occupant of the utility, and
the 18-year-old female driver of the Pajero were seriously injured – one is reported to be in a critical condition. Both were airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital.

A male passenger in the 4WD was also taken to hospital to be checked as a
precaution, while a second passenger escaped injury.

Crash investigation police are continuing their inquiries into the events
leading up to the collision.

Lake Road was closed for several hours following the crash but has since been reopened.
