An investigation is under way into the cause of a fierce fire which destroyed the iconic Ayers Rock Roadhouse at North Arm Cove last night.

An employee raised the alarm just after 7 o’clock with a fire crew from Tea Gardens arriving a short time later to find the structure engulfed in flames.

50 firefighters worked to keep the blaze from reaching fuel bowsers nearby while an adjacent camping ground was also evacuated.

No-one was injured.

Police and Fire investigators will comb through the rubble today to determined the cause of the blaze.

The well-known pit-stop was opened in 1990 by the Leyland Brothers as an amusement park, but it sent them broke and was sold for a song in 1992.
