A 37-year-old man has been taken into custody following a siege at Jesmond.

Officers were called to reports of a domestic dispute at a home in Cameron Street just before 1 o’clock on Wednesday morning.

Police say the man barricaded himself in a room and armed himself with a hammer and a knife.

Specialist negotiators eventually convinced the man to surrender – he was taken to the Calvary Mater Hospital for a mental health assessment and is likely to be charged over the incident.
