A smoke alarm has saved the life of a man after his Muswellbrook home went up in flames overnight.
Newcastle Fire Command says they received 9 triple zero calls just before midnight on Tuesday, with crews from Muswellbrook, Aberdeen and Denman arriving to find the vinyl clad single level home on Shaw Street well alight.
A 53-year-old man, who was the sole occupant of the home, was woken by a smoke alarm and managed to escape as the fire took hold.
He was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and was taken to Muswellbrook Hospital for observation.
It took about an hour to extinguish the fire which also melted the cladding and eves of the home next door.
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
