A Saxophone in Paris
On this edition you can hear the Nexas Quartet standing as a trailblazing saxophone ensemble known for redefining the boundaries of chamber music. Comprising saxophonists Michael Duke, Andrew Smith, Nathan Henshaw, and Jay Byrnes, the quartet has garnered widespread recognition for their exceptional musicianship and unique artistic approach.
Founded in 2002 the ensemble has a passion for versatility that seamlessly presents multiple genres of music whilst captivating audiences with their dynamic performances. Their innovative interpretations and bold programming showcase the saxophone’s expressive range and adaptability.
Song of the Earth
On the third program (15 June) Genevieve Dickson (mezzo-sporano), Iain Henderson (tenor) and Jonathan Wilson (piano) perform Mahler’s great song cycle using the score for piano and voice arranged by Mahler himself.
Mahler’s extraordinary music “Song of the Earth” is perhaps the greatest song cycle of the 20th century. It captures the essence of the very human struggle that unites us, and ultimately, the quiet ecstasy of acceptance bringing inner peace.
