This work by Edward Elgar begins a program in which Michael Dudman performed two roles: as conductor of a large choral work, then in an organ recital of works by Bach, Liszt and Messiaen. Hear the program on Sunday in Hunter Rostrum.

The Music Makers is a secular cantata by Edward Elgar, first performed at the Birmingham Festival on 1 Oct 1912. The work sets a poem by Alfred O’Shaughnessy for Contralto solo, chorus and orchestra and contains many quotations from Elgar’s earlier works, particularly Enigma, Gerontious, Sea Pictures, both Symphonies and the Violin Concerto.
